The Cottages
All three Watermill Cottages are tastefully converted from the former Mill building, barns, stables and labourers’ cottages around the old mill-house, built in the 1750s, by the Gara Brook between Slapton and Strete.
They’re a maximum 30 metres’ distance of each other, and so ideal for combining for larger parties of family and friends. All together we can accommodate up to 16 people.

Each cottage offers spacious, comfortable accommodation: a modern fitted kitchen (with washing machine, a dishwasher (only in Crownwheel) microwave, electric oven or range, kettle, toaster, fridge-freezer), bathrooms with baths and showers, a logburner, TV & DVD, superfast WIFI, outdoor furniture and bbq, and two or three bedrooms. Cots and highchairs are available for free – just ask when you book.
There’s a wood-burning stove in each cottage plus heating from electric storage and wall heaters so you’re warm and cosy whatever the season. Plenty of logs are included in the cottage rental, and beds have a patchwork quilt or fleecy throws. Freshly-ironed 100% cotton bed-linen is included. If we need to follow Government Covid19 safety guidelines, we might need to ask you to bring your own bedlinen and towels but will of course let you know in good time if these guidelines become the new normal.
Our experienced cleaning team take pride in their work so your cottage is thoroughly clean when you arrive. It’s equipped with fresh pillow protectors on the pillows, fresh mattress protectors on double and single beds, microfibre cloths, tea towels, bathmats – and basic Eco cleaning products to minimise our environmental impact.
It’s tranquil here so you can enjoy a real-life 24-hour nature channel with a soundtrack of birdsong and the splashing stream – real peace and quiet! Each cottage has plenty of books, DVDs, jigsaws and games, an info folder with walks, beaches and where to eat.
Please choose from Barleycorn Cottage + garden in the former mill itself, streamside Crownwheel Cottage with its secluded walled patio or Mill Cottage with lovely views along the brook and the valley.
Sundowners by the stream…
Each cottage has its own outside seating – Barleycorn Cottage has a private enclosed garden. Crownwheel Cottage has a low-walled streamside patio with a gate to lawn and woods. Mill Cottage’s patio in the level courtyard is full of flowers and herbs and a few steps from the shared lawns and stream.
Or enjoy the huge shared streamside lawn, watch the trout jump or paddle in the stream! A great space for games. Pull up a chair and make the most of the valley views. Sundowners by the stream… There are bbqs in each cottage to use in your garden, patio or by the brook.
Walks around the valley…
We welcome well-behaved dogs (other pets by arrangement) at a cost of £25 each per week and are flexible on number.
Each cottage info folder has guides to the different walks around the valley and beyond with guidance to dog owners on other dog-friendly walks, beaches and pubs nearby. There are two dog-friendly pubs close by in Slapton, The Queens Arms (offers takeaway food) and The Tower Inn. Strete, a 40 minute walk, has The Kings Arms with beautiful sea views from the dog-friendly garden. The pretty local villages offer a range of dining options with or without hounds.
