in decor, yet each offers spacious, comfortable accommodation
All five Watermill Cottages are tastefully converted from the former Mill building, barns, stables and labourers’ cottages around the old mill-house, built in the 1750s, by the Gara Brook between Slapton and Strete.
They’re a maximum 150 metres’ distance of each other, and so ideal for combining for larger parties of family and friends. All together we can accommodate up to 23 people.
Each cottage offers spacious, comfortable accommodation: a modern fitted kitchen (with washing machine, microwave, electric oven or range, kettle, toaster, fridge-freezer), bathrooms with baths and showers, a logburner, outdoor furniture and bbq, and two or three bedrooms. Cots and highchairs are available for free – just ask when you book.
All five cottages have a wood-burning stove plus heating from electric storage and wall heaters so you’re warm and cosy whatever the season. Plenty of logs are included in the cottage rental, and beds have a patchwork quilt or fleecy throws. Freshly-ironed 100% cotton bed-linen is included; please bring your own towels.
Our experienced cleaning team take pride in their work so your cottage is thoroughly clean when you arrive. It’s equipped with basic Eco cleaning products, microfibre cloths, tea towels, bathmats, and handmade British liquid soap to minimise our environmental impact.
It’s tranquil here – TV or mobile signals don’t reach the valley, so you can enjoy a real-life 24-hour nature channel right with a soundtrack of birdsong and the splashing river – real peace and quiet! Each cottage has a radio, plenty of books, an info folder with walks, beaches and where to eat. The office in the courtyard has a games cupboard with a good supply of games for all ages. A real digital detox… Barleycorn Cottage receives some internet and we’re putting internet into Quack Cottage in February 2020.
Sundowners by the stream…
Each cottage has its own outside seating; Barleycorn, Rose and Quack Cottages have their own enclosed gardens.
Crownwheel Cottage has a private, riverside patio, low-walled, festooned with honeysuckle with a gate leading across a lawn and small bridge to the woodland stroll between mill leat & river. Mill Cottage has a flower- and herb-filled patio in the courtyard by the river wall. Or enjoy the shared large riverside lawn and paddle in the stream – collect wood, light the firepit, pull up a chair (or stump) and make the most of it! Sundowners by the stream… There’s plenty of parking and bbqs to use in your garden, patio or by the river.
Walks around the valley…
Barleycorn and Crownwheel Cottages run from Saturday to Saturday and Quack, Mill and Rose Cottages start and finish on a Friday. We welcome well-behaved dogs (other pets by arrangement) at a cost of £25 each per week and are flexible on number.
Each cottage has descriptions of the different walks around the valley and guidance to dog owners on other dog-friendly walks, beaches and pubs nearby. There are two dog-friendly pubs close by in Slapton, The Queens Arms (offers takeaway food) and The Tower Inn, and many more in local villages.
